Swede Best of All is a dependable, hardy Brassica napus variety known for its mild flavour and delightfully smooth texture. These traditional heirloom vegetable seeds produce medium-sized roots with a distinctive purple top and tasty golden-yellow flesh – everything you could want in a home-grown swede. The slightly sweet, nutty flavour is outstanding mashed, roasted or added to hearty soups, stews and casseroles.

Easy to grow even for beginners, these excellent vegetable seeds perform well in Australian gardens, particularly in deep, well-prepared, nutrient-rich soil. A hardy variety, Swede Best of All is resilient to colder weather, making it a great crop for cooler climates and a true staple in the winter kitchen. Regular, thorough watering will help maximise your yields.

How to Sow Seeds

Method: Sow your swede seeds 5mm (¼ in) deep, allowing 45cm (18 in) between rows.
Thinning: Keep the soil consistently moist and thin out the seedlings as early as possible, leaving 25cm (10 in) between plants to give them room to grow.
Germination: Seedlings typically emerge within 6-10 days.
Growing notes: Swede Best of All is best sown from late summer to autumn. Swedes grow well in any fertile garden soil but do best in rich, deeply dug ground. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season (especially during dry periods) and harvest your swedes once the bulbs reach a good size, typically 12-16 weeks after sowing.
