Aster Californian Giant is a summer sensation. Growing up to 60 cm tall, these old favourites add height and drama to garden beds, borders, and containers–as well as colour, with pinks, reds, purples, and whites. They’re a true focal point in any planting scheme.

These flowers are great for cutting and making impressive displays in vases. As an annual, it flowers in the same year and does well in either sun or partial shade. Being so easy to grow, it rewards beginner gardeners or anyone with small, less-than-ideal garden spaces.

How to Sow Seeds

Method: Sow Aster seeds in seed boxes or punnets, about 5mm (0.25in) deep, or directly in the flowering position.
Growing notes: Plant 45cm (18in) apart, waiting until the frosts are over. In hot weather, spread a mulch of lawn clippings or compost over the soil surface to conserve moisture and keep the roots cool. Asters need plenty of water during their growing and flowering season.
