Why We Recommend It

  • Fresh green foliage and a distinctive branching form give this evergreen conifer a strong architectural presence.
  • Grow it as a feature in a spacious garden or maintain a smaller specimen in a well-drained container.
  • A rewarding choice for plant collectors interested in a remarkable living species rediscovered in 1994.

Plant Details
Botanical Name Wollemia nobilis
Common Names Wollemi Pine; Dinosaur Tree
Plant Type Evergreen conifer; naturally capable of producing multiple stems
Position Sheltered part shade preferred, especially when young; acclimatise gradually to more sun
Mature Size Can exceed 20 m in the ground, with approximately 4–8 m or more of spread. Old trees in ideal conditions may approach 40 m; long-term size estimates vary. Container growth and pruning can keep it substantially smaller.
Maintenance Monitor moisture and drainage; prune if maintaining a compact specimen
Care Guide

Position: Choose a cool, sheltered position in part shade, particularly for young plants. Avoid hot, exposed sites and drying winds. Introduce additional sun gradually. For temporary indoor display, use a bright position and return the plant regularly to a sheltered outdoor location; it is best treated as an outdoor tree.

Soil & watering: Use acidic, organically rich soil or a quality acidic potting mix with excellent drainage. Check moisture regularly; when the upper potting mix becomes dry, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Keep the root zone moist below the surface without persistent saturation. Never leave the pot standing in water, and adjust watering to weather, pot size and growth.

Feeding & repotting: Use controlled-release fertiliser at the label rate. Botanic Gardens of Sydney advises a premium acidic mix, such as one labelled for azaleas or camellias, rather than an ultra-low-phosphorus native mix. Repot in early spring when roots fill the container, moving up one pot size rather than into an oversized pot. Keep the existing planting depth.

Pruning & seasonal changes: Use clean, sharp tools to shape or restrict growth if required; undertake major formative pruning in early winter. White waxy caps on resting buds and some bronze-toned winter foliage are normal features. Check drainage and moisture promptly if foliage yellows or the plant loses vigour.

Flowering, Fruiting & Fragrance

Flowering PeriodN/A — cone production depends on maturity and growing conditions.
FruitingMale and female cones can occur on the same mature tree. Not an edible fruit crop.
Delivery Restrictions

Complete The Project
  • A quality acidic potting mix for container growing.
  • A stable pot with ample drainage holes, only modestly larger than the root ball.
  • Controlled-release fertiliser used at the label rate.
  • Mulch for garden planting to moderate soil temperature; keep it clear of the trunk.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep a Wollemi Pine in a pot?

Yes. Container growing and pruning allow a smaller specimen to be maintained for many years. Provide drainage and repot as the roots fill the container.

How big will it become in the garden?

It is a large, long-lived tree. Allow for more than 20 m in height and a broad crown over time; favourable sites can support much larger trees. A pot-grown or pruned specimen stays smaller.

Can it live indoors?

Use a well-lit spot for indoor display, then give it regular time outside in shelter. An outdoor position is preferable to continuous life in an air-conditioned room.

Does it need full sun?

Part shade and shelter are safer for young plants. Sun tolerance depends on climate and acclimatisation; avoid intense heat and sudden moves into exposed sun.

How do I avoid overwatering?

Check the potting mix before watering. Water thoroughly when needed, let it drain freely and empty any saucer. Do not use a fixed daily schedule or leave the root zone saturated.

What are the white caps on the growing tips?

Waxy caps protect the resting growing buds during cooler months. They are a normal seasonal feature.

Will it flower?

No. Wollemi Pine is a conifer and produces cones instead of flowers.

What sizes are available?

140 mm pot: approx. 300 mm above pot; 200 mm pot: approx. 500 mm above pot; 300 mm pot: approx. 1 m above pot. Sizes vary naturally with stock and season.
