Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the compost have a strong earthy or manure smell?
A sweet, earthy or manure aroma can occur naturally in freshly composted organic materials. It usually decreases as the compost matures. Aroma alone does not indicate product performance.
Does the smell mean it has not been fully composted?
No. Searles states that its compost products are fully composted and that batches are tested before packaging. A natural earthy aroma can still be present.
Should I mix it with existing soil?
Yes. Searles recommends blending half compost with existing garden soil, rather than planting into compost alone.
Can I use it in pots?
No. It is designed to improve garden soil and is not suitable for pot planting. Choose a potting mix for containers.
Does it help clay and sandy soils?
Yes. Clay breaker helps loosen and aerate heavy clay, while the compost adds organic matter and humus to deficient sandy soils.
What is it boosted with?
It is boosted with fish and seaweed and contains vermicast worm castings.
How do I estimate how much compost I need?
Use the calculator above for the compost you will add. If preparing an equal-parts compost and soil blend, compost makes up half the finished blend by volume. Confirm quantities before ordering.
