Why We Recommend It

  • The mature foliage develops distinctive, narrow, flame-like divisions, making this an unusual feature plant for foliage collectors.
  • A warm, bright indoor position with filtered light allows its leaves to develop without the stress of strong direct sun.
  • Training the stems up a moss pole or climbing board helps support the plant as it develops its mature leaf shape.

Care Guide

Position: Grow in bright, indirect light indoors or in a warm, protected position. Avoid strong direct afternoon sun, cold draughts and frost. Rotate the pot occasionally for even growth.

Watering: Water thoroughly, then allow the upper layer of potting mix to dry slightly before watering again. Reduce watering during cooler, slower-growing periods and never leave the pot standing in water.

Potting mix and feeding: Use a chunky, airy, free-draining aroid mix in a pot with drainage holes. Feed lightly with a balanced indoor plant fertiliser during active growth, following the product label; avoid feeding a stressed or waterlogged plant.

Support and maintenance: Give the plant a sturdy moss pole or climbing board and gently secure stems as needed. Juvenile leaves may look much simpler than mature leaves. Remove damaged foliage with clean tools and repot when the roots have filled the pot. Like other Monsteras, it contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept away from pets and children who may chew it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the young leaves not flame-shaped?

Young plants often have simpler, less divided leaves. The distinctive narrow lobes become more pronounced as the plant matures, especially when it is climbing in suitable conditions.

Does it need a moss pole?

A moss pole or climbing board is strongly recommended. It gives the stems a structure to climb and helps the plant develop larger, more mature foliage.

Can I grow it in a low-light room?

It is better suited to bright, indirect light. Low light may lead to slower growth and smaller, less developed leaves.

How often should I water it?

Check the potting mix rather than watering to a fixed schedule. Water when the upper layer has dried slightly, then let excess water drain away.

What potting mix should I use?

Choose a coarse, free-draining aroid mix that retains some moisture while allowing air around the roots. Avoid dense, constantly wet soil.

Can it grow outdoors?

In suitable warm, frost-free conditions it can grow in a sheltered, shaded position. Protect it from cold, wind and direct afternoon sun.

Is Monstera Burle Marx Flame safe for pets?

No. As with other Monsteras, chewing the plant can cause irritation. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.
