Natural Coconut Coir Helps Retain Moisture Suppresses Weeds Pre-Slit for Easy Fitting Indoor & Outdoor Use

Natural Coconut Coir Mulch Mats provide a simple way to cover and protect the soil surface around potted plants, trees, vegetables and other garden plants. Made from natural coconut husk fibre with a natural rubber latex backing, these 5mm thick round discs act much like traditional mulch, helping reduce moisture loss, moderate soil temperature and suppress weed growth.

Each mat is pre-slit so it can be easily positioned around an existing plant and can be trimmed further to suit different pots and planting areas. The coir fibre allows water, air and nutrients to pass through to the soil and roots below while providing a protective layer over exposed potting mix.

Suitable For:

Ideal for indoor plants, outdoor pots, balcony and courtyard plants, fruit trees, vegetables, climbers and other container-grown or garden plants where a natural mulch layer is beneficial.

How it Works:

The dense layer of coconut fibre covers exposed soil in much the same way as loose mulch. This helps slow evaporation from the soil surface, provides some insulation against changing temperatures and reduces the amount of light reaching emerging weeds.

The coir remains porous, allowing irrigation water, liquid nutrients and air to move through the mat and into the growing media below.

How to Use:
  1. Select a mat suitable for the pot or area you wish to cover.
  2. Use the pre-cut slit to position the mat around the base of the plant.
  3. Trim the outer edge if required to achieve a better fit inside the pot or planting area.
  4. Enlarge the centre opening if necessary so the mat sits comfortably around the plant stem or trunk.
  5. Lay the mat flat over the soil surface.
  6. Water normally through the mat, allowing moisture to penetrate into the soil below.
For Indoor Plants & Fungus Gnats:

Covering exposed potting mix creates a physical barrier between adult fungus gnats and the moist growing media where they commonly lay their eggs. While not a fungus gnat treatment on its own, a coir mat can form part of an overall management approach by making the soil surface less accessible.

Good watering practices are still important. Avoid continually wet potting mix and ensure pots drain freely, as consistently damp growing conditions can encourage fungus gnat activity.

Use as a Worm Blanket:

Coconut coir mats can also be used as a worm blanket in a worm farm. Place the mat over the food scraps in the top working tray to help create the dark, moist and aerated environment that compost worms prefer.

Important:

Do not pack the mat tightly against soft plant stems or trunks. Watering requirements vary according to the plant, pot size, growing conditions and season, so check the moisture level beneath the mat when determining when to water.
