Description – Lisbons are the most common commercially grown lemon in Australia, but they’re still right at home in the backyard as well. The reason for this popularity is largely thanks to their thin, but long-lasting skin. This gives them a pretty remarkable shelf life, which is especially good considering they usually tend to produce a single major crop per season, with very little staggering between when the fruit ripens.

The fruit is a nice size and has a high juice content with good acidity, which makes them a good ‘all-rounder’ lemon option for things like cooking, baking, and even making beverages like a refreshing classic lemonade.

Lisbon trees are very vigorous when grown in ideal conditions. Even the dwarf version can reach 2.5 – 3.5 m tall, which is one of the largest dwarf varieties we have. If you’re looking for a lemon tree that will ‘match’ the height of an existing orange or lime tree, it may be worth considering a dwarf Lisbon as they’ll stay a bit smaller and won’t overtake the other trees too much. One thing to note is that Lisbon trees can be quite thorny, so do be careful when harvesting.

Care – Maintain regular watering during establishment and through the warmer growing season. Drought tolerant once established. Watch for pest and treat at the first sign of damage.
