Celebrating Mother’s Day with Blooming Gifts

Mother’s Day in May is one of the best times of the year. The days are getting shorter with crisp, cool mornings and sunny afternoons. It's the perfect season for a hearty Sunday roast or a comforting slow-cooked meal. But more importantly, it's a time to express gratitude to all the mums out there.

Chrysanthemums: The Traditional Choice

Chrysanthemums are the traditional Mother’s Day gift. They bloom in bright yellows, oranges, reds, and pinks. When purchasing, look for plants with tight, compact growth. You should be able to gently press your palm into the top and feel good resistance. Be careful not to crush or damage any flowers.

Cyclamens: A Favourite for Many

Cyclamens have become a favourite in recent years. These plants showcase full blooms for several months and are relatively easy to maintain: just pinch out old flowers and leaves, and water and feed from the bottom.

Dahlias: My Personal Favourite

My favourite for Mum is dahlias. Some flowering varieties have extravagant flowers with multitudes of colours. They will die down after flowering—just prune them back hard, and they will regrow next year.

Orchids: A Classic Gift

Another classic gift for mums is orchids. There are two types of orchids this time of year:

  • Cymbidium Orchids (Cymbidium cvs): These have long flower spikes producing many flowers that open over several weeks.
  • Phalaenopsis Orchids (Phalaenopsis sp.): Also known as Singapore orchids, they love being indoors and look great on the kitchen windowsill or bedside.

Orchids are long-lasting, elegant, and a beautiful way to say “I love you” on Mother’s Day.
