Description

A beautiful, upright-growing deciduous magnolia developed by Peter Cave in New Zealand. 'Royal Purple' features a striking columnar habit and displays magnificent 20cm cup-and-saucer shaped blooms. The buds and outer petals are a deep red-purple, with a softer tone on the flower’s inner surfaces. This fragrant and elegant magnolia is an excellent vertical accent tree and performs beautifully when planted in a row or as a stand-alone feature.

Full sun to part shade; best in a sheltered position

Care

Plant in humus-rich, well-drained soil. Keep moist during establishment and mulch annually to retain moisture. Avoid disturbing roots. Minimal pruning required—prune only to shape after flowering. Protect from strong winds and late frosts.
